The new year has adventure written all over it. The last couple of months have been so busy with getting settled in Iowa and our new routines that we haven’t had time for much adventure. But this year I’ve decided that I wanted to get up from my desk and spend more time outside as a family. Never in a million years did I think I would add “outdoorswoman” to my skill set. We’ve always enjoyed visiting state parks so I thought starting the new year with a trip to Manquoketa Caves State Park in Manquoketa, Iowa would be a great place to start. When was the last time you were inside a cave?
Maquoketa Caves State Park has more caves than any other park in the state of Iowa. In addition to 6 miles of hiking trails, you can picnic and camp at any of the 29 campsites. Oh and there are caves. Lots of them.
I will admit that I was a little intimidated walking down several flights of stairs to get to the caves. Especially since the stairs hadn’t been cleared of the snow. Thankfully the stairs are sturdy and we held on to the rails and made our way down. So glad I was wearing my FitBit!
I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen something this beautiful before. If you look closely you can see the animal tracks in the snow. My son had fun trying to guess which animals made them. I can only imagine what this cave looks like in the springtime.
Here’s the view looking down at a cave. It’s amazing that something this beautiful is so close to home! State parks offer a lot of outdoor adventures for families throughout the year. You can visit the Americas State Parks website to learn more about ways to enjoy the state parks in your state.
Perhaps visiting caves isn’t in your near future, so you can live vicariously through The Croods on Netflix. There are 13 episodes for you to watch of this family who *wait for it* live in a cave!
Each episode is a new adventure or disaster, either way it’s a great escape from the cold weather. What family adventures will you embark on this year?
